Michael Shilale Architects, LLP (MSA) has
committed their practice to sustainable
design for a number of years. Michael
Shilale became a LEED Acredited Design
Professional in 2003, and has brought
sustainable strategies to their schools,
offices, residential and industrial
projects.
When United Water was looking for a design
firm to assist with their new desalination
plant, MSA was the firm they chose. Their
knowledge of local codes and ties to the
community, combined with their emphasis
and experience with sustainable design
made them a perfect choice.
MSA’s sustainable expertise and
recommended strategies will help reduce
the energy use required for the new
treatment facility.
Another important goal of the project is
minimizing the architectural impact of the
plant. An intake structure on the shores
of the Hudson River is required. The
selected site is adjacent to an industrial
site. MSA’s early design studies
attempts to bridge the transition between
the marina and the industrial site to the
south with the residential sites to the
north.
Preliminary designs incorporate nautical
elements that harmonize well with the
Hudson riverfront suggesting images of a
boathouse and other waterfront
architecture.
MSA’s 3D modeling capability proved
valuable to view proposed designs in
context with massing studies and photo
simulations from the river. |
