A
short stroll south from the Historic Dutch
Gardens and some thirty feet above the
scenic Demarest Kill lies the home for
United Hospice of Rockland. Michael Shilale
was asked to create an environment that
would be an efficient and spirit renewing
place to work as well as a respectful
and reassuring environment for meeting
and counseling patients and their families.
A plaza in a verdant green greets visitors
and staff. Through which one enters a
grand entrance lobby. A space that welcomes
and inspires. The Hospice Family Tree
is prominently displayed there. The large
windows and ceiling height of the lobby
space captures the colors of the sky as
well as the landscape. The design, residential
imagery, and enduring materials imbues
a sense of welcome, permanence and hope.
